Grooming Your Dog After Surgery: When and How

Your dog just came home from surgery — maybe a spay/neuter, a mass removal, an ACL repair, or a dental procedure. They're wearing a cone, they might be a little loopy from meds, and they definitely need a bath. But when is it actually safe to groom them?

The general rule: wait for incision healing

Do NOT get the incision site wet until your vet clears it. For most surgeries, this means no baths for 10–14 days after surgery, until sutures or staples are removed and the incision has closed. Getting an incision wet dramatically increases infection risk.

Timeline by surgery type

Different surgeries have different grooming timelines:

• Spay/neuter — typically 10–14 days before a full bath. Light brushing (avoiding the incision area) is fine after 2–3 days
• Mass removal or skin surgery — 10–14 days minimum. May be longer for large incisions
• Orthopedic surgery (ACL, fracture repair) — follow your surgeon's specific instructions
• Dental surgery — no restrictions on body grooming, but avoid the mouth area for 5–7 days
• Ear surgery — no water in ears for 2+ weeks. Body bathing may be fine with ear protection

What you CAN do while waiting

You're not completely stuck during the healing period:

• Gentle brushing of areas away from the incision
• Dry shampoo or waterless shampoo on the coat (NOT near the incision)
• Wipe-downs with unscented pet wipes
• Face and eye cleaning
• Paw wiping after walks

What to AVOID

Non-negotiable until your vet gives the all-clear: full baths, swimming, clipping or shaving near the surgical area, any grooming product on or near the incision, aggressive brushing that might cause the dog to move suddenly.

The first groom after surgery

When your vet gives the all-clear, tell your groomer about the surgery — location, healing status, any ongoing restrictions. Request gentle handling around the surgical area for the first 1–2 grooms. Use hypoallergenic shampoo near the healed incision for the first bath.

Bottom line
