Holiday Pet Boarding: When to Book and What to Expect

Holiday boarding fills up fast — and we mean FAST. Every year, we have families calling the week before Thanksgiving or Christmas hoping to find an opening, and every year we have to turn people away because we hit capacity weeks earlier. Here's the timing guide so you're never scrambling.

When to book for each holiday

Based on 12 years of Panama City boarding demand, here's when facilities typically fill up:

• Thanksgiving week: Book by mid-October. Full capacity usually hit 3–4 weeks before the holiday.
• Christmas/New Year: Book by early November. This is THE busiest period — two solid weeks of maximum demand.
• Spring Break: Book by late January. Panama City gets massive spring break traffic, and boarding fills alongside it.
• Fourth of July: Book by early June. Many families travel AND many local dogs board to avoid fireworks.
• Memorial Day / Labor Day weekends: Book 3–4 weeks ahead.
• Summer vacation: If you're traveling in June–August, book at least a month ahead.

Why early booking matters

It's not just about getting a spot. Early bookings also tend to get the suites you want (larger suites, quieter locations within the facility), avoid any rush fees, and let you plan your travel with boarding confirmed instead of uncertain. Last-minute boarding — if you can even find it — often means your dog ends up at a facility you haven't vetted, which defeats the purpose of choosing carefully.

What's different during peak season

During holidays, boarding facilities are at or near capacity. Here's what that means for your dog:

• Drop-off and pickup may take slightly longer due to volume
• Suite upgrades may not be available — book the suite you want early
• The facility is busier but well-staffed (reputable places staff up for holidays)
• Your dog may interact with more dogs during supervised play times
• Communication may be slightly slower (but photo updates still happen)

Holiday boarding pricing

Most boarding facilities charge a holiday surcharge during peak weeks. This reflects the increased staffing costs (staff are working holidays instead of being with their families), extended hours, and the overhead of running at full capacity. Preparing your pet for a holiday stay

Holiday stays are often longer than weekend boards, so preparation matters more:

• Pack enough food for the full stay plus 2 extra days (travel delays happen, especially during holidays)
• Bring medications with detailed instructions
• Confirm vaccines are current and on file well before drop-off day — don't leave this for the last minute
• If your dog has never boarded, do a trial one-night stay BEFORE the holiday, not during it
• Provide a comfort item that smells like home
• Leave clear emergency contact info plus a backup contact

Alternatives if boarding is full

If you waited too long and boarding is full, your options are:

• In-home pet sitter — hire through a reputable service, check references, and do a meet-and-greet before your trip
• Ask family or friends — someone your dog already knows and trusts
• Waitlist at your preferred facility — cancellations do happen
• Check neighboring cities — facilities 30–60 minutes away may have openings
