Military Deployment Pet Care: Options for Service Members

Deploying is stressful enough without worrying about your pet. Panama City is home to Tyndall Air Force Base, and we've helped dozens of service members plan pet care during deployments. Here are all the options.

Option 1: Family or trusted friends

The most common and usually best option for long deployments. Write a care agreement, pre-pay food and supplies, add the caretaker to your vet's authorization, leave vet records and insurance info, and consider a power of attorney for vet decisions.

Option 2: Military pet foster programs

Organizations that help military families:

• Dogs on Deployment (dogsondeployment.org) — the largest military pet foster network, free matching service
• Guardian Angels for Soldier's Pet — foster care for pets of deployed or injured members
• Local base resources — family readiness groups and chaplains can connect you with local foster families

Option 3: Long-term boarding

For shorter deployments or TDY (1–3 months). Ask about enrichment programs, pre-pay the entire stay, and set up a POA for local decision-making.

Option 4: Pet sitter (live-in or daily visits)

Ideal for short deployments, especially with multiple pets. Expensive for long periods but the pet stays home.

Before you deploy: the preparation checklist

Regardless of option: ensure vaccines won't expire during deployment, stock up on medications, update microchip info with the caretaker, write a detailed care guide, set up or maintain pet insurance, leave a financial plan, get a pre-deployment grooming appointment, and take the pet for a wellness check.
