What Happens at a Dog Grooming Appointment?

If you've never taken your dog to a professional groomer, the process can feel like a mystery. You drop your dog off looking rough and pick them up looking amazing — but what happens in between? Here's exactly what a professional grooming appointment looks like at Animal Friends Pet Care, step by step.

Step 1: Check-in (5 minutes)

When you arrive, we confirm the service you booked, discuss any special requests ("leave the ears long," "trim the face shorter than last time"), note any concerns you have (skin issues, sensitive areas, behavior changes), and verify vaccine records on file. If it's your first visit, we'll ask about your dog's temperament and any grooming history so we know what to expect.

Step 2: Before photos

We photograph your dog before we start. You'll receive these alongside the finished photos so you can see the transformation. It's also a record for us — if we spot a new lump or skin issue, we can compare to previous photos.

Step 3: Pre-brush assessment

Before the bath, we do a full coat assessment. We check for matting (and its severity), look for skin issues, check the ears visually, and plan the groom. If there's significant matting, we'll call you to discuss options before proceeding — you'll never be surprised by a shave-down you didn't approve.

Step 4: Bath (15–30 minutes)

We select shampoo matched to your dog's coat type and skin needs — there's no one-size-fits-all. The bath is thorough: full lather, scrub to the skin, focused attention on dirty areas (belly, paws, rear), followed by conditioner for coats that benefit from it. Water temperature is warm, not hot. We wash the face separately with a gentle tearless formula.

Step 5: Blow-dry (20–45 minutes)

This is the step most people underestimate. Professional blow-drying with a high-velocity dryer removes far more loose undercoat than any home toweling or air-drying. It also straightens curly coats for an even haircut and fluffs the coat so we can see exactly what we're cutting. For thick or double-coated dogs, drying can take 45 minutes or more.

Step 6: Haircut and styling (30–60 minutes)

For full grooms, this is where the magic happens. Using professional clippers and scissors, we shape the body, legs, face, ears, feet, and tail according to the breed standard or your custom request. This is the most skilled part of the process — it takes years of training to get a smooth, even cut that follows the dog's natural body lines.

Step 7: Ear cleaning

We clean the ears with veterinary-grade solution, gently removing wax and debris. This is also a health check — we look for signs of infection (redness, swelling, unusual odor, discharge). If we see anything concerning, we'll let you know and recommend a vet visit.

Step 8: Nail trim

We trim nails with professional guillotine clippers and follow up with a dremel grind for smooth edges. Overgrown nails affect your dog's gait and can cause joint problems over time, so this isn't optional — it's part of every groom.

Step 9: Finishing touches

Sanitary trim (around private areas), paw pad trim (removing hair between paw pads that collects debris), teeth brushing if requested, cologne or finishing spray, and a bandana or bow if you like. The goal is a dog who looks and smells amazing.

Step 10: Wellness check and after photos

Every groom includes a nose-to-tail wellness check. We feel for lumps, check skin condition, look at teeth and gums, and note anything unusual. Then we take the finished photos and get your dog ready for pickup.

Step 11: Pickup

We bring your dog out, walk you through what we found (any health observations, grooming recommendations for next time), show you the before/after photos, and book the next appointment if you'd like to stay on schedule. The whole pickup takes about 5 minutes.
