That advice is wrong, and following it can permanently damage your dog's coat. A double coat is engineered insulation. The outer guard hairs deflect sun, rain, and dirt, while the soft undercoat traps a layer of air against the skin that keeps your dog warm in winter and cool in summer. Shaving a double-coated dog removes the guard hairs that protect against sunburn while leaving the dense undercoat behind — which actually makes them hotter, not cooler. Worse, when guard hairs are clipped they often grow back patchy, with the undercoat overtaking them. The texture, color, and protective function never fully return. This is called "coat funk" and we see it every summer on dogs whose previous groomer recommended a shave.
What your double-coated dog actually needs is a proper deshedding service. We start with a warm bath using a deshedding shampoo that loosens the dead undercoat, follow with a deshedding conditioner that softens the remaining dead hair, then use a high-velocity blow-out to literally blast the loose undercoat off the dog. A single proper deshed removes more dead coat than weeks of brushing at home — most owners are shocked by the size of the pile. The skin underneath is clean, cool, and properly ventilated, while the guard hairs are preserved.
Different double-coated breeds need different protocols. Huskies need full deshed every 8-10 weeks during shedding season, plus a maintenance brush schedule at home with a slicker and undercoat rake. German shepherds shed continuously and benefit from a deshed every 6-8 weeks. Golden retrievers need extra attention to feathering and pants. Australian shepherds with merle coats need careful drying to preserve the undercoat structure. Pomeranians and Shelties get long sessions of slow, methodical brush-out.
