Anal gland expression is the manual emptying of the two small scent glands located on either side of your dog anus. These glands normally express (empty) naturally during bowel movements, but some dogs — particularly small breeds — have difficulty expressing them on their own. When anal glands become full, impacted, or infected, dogs show discomfort by scooting their rear on the ground, licking the area excessively, or having difficulty sitting. Groomers perform external anal gland expression by applying gentle pressure on either side of the anus through a tissue or cloth. This releases the gland contents (a fishy-smelling, brownish fluid). Internal expression, which is more thorough, should be performed by a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Not all dogs need regular anal gland expression — many dogs go their entire lives without needing it. If your dog shows signs of discomfort, your groomer can check and express externally. Chronic anal gland issues should be evaluated by a veterinarian to rule out allergies, diet issues, or gland disease.
