Golden retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in the Panama City area, and that gorgeous coat is a big part of their charm — but it’s also a lot of dog to keep groomed, especially in our heat and humidity. Goldens shed heavily, develop feathering that tangles, and are frequently (and mistakenly) shaved by owners hoping to beat the Florida heat. Here’s how to properly care for a golden retriever’s coat, why shaving is the wrong move, and how often goldens need professional grooming.
The golden coat: double and demanding
Golden retrievers have a thick double coat — a water-repellent outer coat and a dense, insulating undercoat — plus the long "feathering" on their ears, legs, tail, and underside. That undercoat is why goldens shed so much, and in our mild, warm climate they tend to shed steadily year-round rather than in two clean seasonal bursts. The feathering, meanwhile, tangles and mats if not brushed and tidied. It’s a beautiful coat, but it asks for real, regular maintenance to stay healthy and comfortable.
Never shave a golden
It’s tempting in the Florida heat, but you should never shave a golden retriever. Their double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and protects their skin from the sun. Shaving it doesn’t keep a golden cooler, exposes them to sunburn, and can cause the coat to grow back patchy, dull, and damaged — sometimes permanently. The right way to manage a golden’s coat and shedding in summer is deshedding, which removes the loose undercoat while keeping the protective coat fully intact.
Deshedding is the answer
For a golden, regular deshedding is the single most effective way to manage that heavy coat. A deshedding service — a deshedding bath, a high-velocity blow-out that blows the loose undercoat out, and a thorough brush-out — removes far more dead undercoat than home brushing alone, leaving your golden cooler, cleaner, and shedding dramatically less around the house for weeks. Feathering, ears, and feet
Beyond the body coat, goldens need attention to the details. The feathering on the legs, ears, tail, and underside tangles and collects debris, so it needs regular brushing and light tidying. Their floppy ears, in our humidity, are prone to moisture and ear issues, so keeping them clean matters. The fur between their paw pads and feathering on the feet collect sand spurs and debris and benefit from tidying. These finishing touches keep a golden comfortable and looking their best.
