Dog Grooming Style Guide
A shavedown (also called a strip, shave-off, or reset cut) removes severely matted coat down to the skin using a #7 or #10 blade. This is not a style choice — it is a humane solution when a dog or cat coat has become so matted that the mats are pulling on the skin, trapping moisture, hiding skin infections, or causing pain. Groomers will always attempt to demat a coat first, but when matting is pelted (matted tight against the skin like a felt sheet), dematting would cause more pain and stress than shaving. A professional shavedown requires exceptional skill because the blade must navigate under tightly pelted mats near sensitive skin, skin folds, and bony areas. Post-shave care is important: the skin may be red, irritated, or show clipper irritation. Apply soothing balm, prevent scratching, and protect from sun exposure until the coat regrows. A healthy coat typically regrows in 3-6 months. To avoid future shavedowns, establish a regular professional grooming schedule and brush between appointments.
